A Few Key Terms… To understand handicaps, you’ll hear terms like Course Rating and Slope Rating. These are just numbers the golf authorities assign to each course to indicate difficulty. Course Rating is how many strokes a scratch (0 handicap) golfer should take on that course, and Slope Rating measures how much harder the course plays for a bogey golfer (around 18–20 handicap) compared to a scratch golfer. These ratings help calculate your handicap for a specific course (your Course Handicap). The good news? These values are pre-calculated for you, so you don’t need to do any complex maths on the scorecard during a Sunday round. How to Get Your Handicap (WHS, step-by-step) Get set up: Join a golf club or your national body’s scheme (e.g., iGolf in England) so your scores feed into the World Handicap System (WHS). Grab the app: Download your official handicap app (e.g., MyEG), sign in, and turn on location/club permissions if asked. Pick your tees: Choose a rated course and tee set (they’ll have a Course Rating and Slope Rating shown in the app). Pre-register: Before you tee off, start a scorecard in the app and add a marker to verify your score. Play by the Rules: 9 or 18 holes both count. Keep it honest and finish out putts unless the format says otherwise. Post your score the same day: Enter hole-by-hole if you can; your marker attests in the app. No spreadsheets required — the app does the maths. Behind the scenes: WHS creates a Score Differential for that round, adjusting for Course Rating, Slope, and the day’s PCC (playing conditions). First handicap: After 54 holes of acceptable scores (any mix of 9s and 18s), you’ll get your initial Handicap Index. How it updates: Once you have 20 scores, your Index becomes the average of your best 8 most recent differentials and updates after every round. On the day you play: Your app converts Index → Course Handicap for those tees automatically. In competitions, an allowance may then be applied to give your Playing Handicap. Keep it current: Log every round you can. More scores = a truer Index, better targets, and a clearer picture of your progress. How to Work out Your Handicap (WHS Made Simple) Your Handicap Index The WHS keeps a running record of your scores and sets your Handicap Index from the average of your best 8 differentials out of your last 20 rounds. It updates as you play, so it reflects your current ability - not a lifetime average. What’s a Score Differential? After you submit a score, the system creates a Score Differential that adjusts your gross score for the course’s difficulty (Course Rating and Slope) and the daily Playing Conditions Calculation (PCC) when applicable. No algebra required-the app does the maths-but that’s how it keeps things fair from one course and day to the next. Course Handicap (the shots you get today) Your Handicap Index is universal, but the shots you receive depend on where you’re playing. For your tee set, the Course Handicap is calculated from your Handicap Index, the tee’s Slope Rating, and Course Rating minus Par. In short: harder tees, more shots; friendlier tees, fewer. Your club board or app will convert it for you automatically. Brand new to handicaps? You can get an initial Handicap Index after 54 holes of acceptable scores (any mix of 9- and 18-hole rounds) on rated courses-handy if you’re starting out or not a club member. From there, every new score can nudge your index up or down. Watching that number drop as your practice pays off is half the fun. For Low-Handicappers & Aspiring Scratch Players When you’re already a skilled player, the path to improvement is more about fine margins and consistency under pressure. Too low spin or too shallow a descent and you’ll know why those 5-irons are running away. Refine shot shapes and “go-to” shots At a low handicap, you should develop a few stock shots – maybe a huge drive off the tee, or a fade with the 6-iron when needed. Use the simulator to practice these speciality shots. Want a reliable punch shot under the wind? Try different ball positions and swing lengths while watching the launch angle on the monitor. You’ll see immediately what trajectory you’re getting. Work on a soft fade approach – the monitor will tell you if you’re actually taking off a few yards and adding spin for that controlled flight. The R10 is smaller and hard to believe it can do so much with such a tiny design (the case is a little big, in our opinion). It is a little bit older, as it was initially released in 2021, but does get regular software updates.  There is also one big difference from the Rapsodo device - Garmin is radar-based. This means it only measures club speed, ball speed, launch direction, launch angle, and timing of your swing. The other metrics are calculated using an advanced algorithm, which might not gauge your shots as accurately. The Garmin R10 does come with Home Tee Hero, which gives you access to more than 42,000 courses. It’s slightly cheaper than the Rapsodo at £649.  Comparing the Garmin R10 vs. Rapsodo MLM2 Pro There are a lot of similarities between the two devices but some noticeable differences as well. Let’s go through each to see which one will suit your game the best. Design and Specifications First off, each launch monitor has great packaging and presentation.  Both devices come with everything you need to get started hitting golf balls quickly. Each comes with a sturdy carrying case to protect your investment, and both fit in your bag with ease. In the week that the Masters gets underway across the hallowed turfs of the Augusta National in Georgia USA, here are 16 facts you may or may not know about this iconic event in the golfing calendar.   The Masters was first staged on March 22nd 1934 and organised by Bobby Jones and Clifford Roberts. For its first five stagings, it was known as the Augusta National Invitational. The so-called ‘Founders Circle’ is sited at the base of the flagpole in front of the clubhouse, where two plaques commemorate the two founders.   From 1940 until the present day, the Masters has been staged during the first full week in April. The only exception being in 2020 when, due to the pandemic, it was held over until November and contested without patrons being in attendance.   Jack Nicklaus holds the most Masters titles – 6 - becoming the oldest winner in 1986, aged 46 years, 2 months and 23 days. Tiger Woods, with 5 wins was the youngest winner in 1997, at 21 years, 3 months and 14 days.   The Green Jacket was first awarded to the 1949 winner, Sam Snead. However, the tradition of members wearing green jackets began in 1937. The idea was that patrons attending the Masters could easily identify members, who could provide them with accurate information. The use of the term “patron”, as opposed to spectator, was meant to differentiate between those attending the Masters, rather than other sporting events. Co-founder Clifford Roberts wanted to recognise those attending as consumers rather than fans. Today, the daily attendance of patrons is around 40,000.   Amen Corner, or part of the course comprising the second half of holes 11 and 12 and the first half of hole 13, was named as such in 1958 by the Sports Illustrated writer, Herbert Warren Wind. It was where the critical action of that year’s tournament took place. The name was borrowed from an old jazz recording called “Shouting at Amen Corner.” The iconic name has stuck to this day.   Magnolia Lane extends from the entrance gate to the clubhouse. His property, Rae’s Hall, was credited with keeping local residents safe during Indian attacks.   Augusta National has three dedicated bridges: the Sarazen Bridge at hole No. 15, honouring Gene Sarazen's double eagle there during the 1935 Masters; the Hogan Bridge at the No. 12 green, in recognition of Ben Hogan's then record score of 274 in 1953; and the Nelson Bridge at the No. 13 tee, in memory of Byron Nelson's outstanding play at the 12th and 13th holes when winning the 1937 Masters.   You cannot apply for membership of Augusta National Golf Club – you can only be invited. Only two pro golfers are current members: Jack Nicklaus and former amateur stalwart John Harris(who recently retired from the PGA Tour Champions). Four times Masters winner Arnold Palmer, who died in 2016, was also a club member. The first African-American member was admitted in 1990.   Avid golfer Dwight (Ike) Eisenhower is the only U.S. president to have been a club member. There’s a strong connection between eating well and scoring well.  Obviously, you don’t want to arrive on the first tee having gorged yourself on a six-course banquet. Equally, you don’t want to be weak-kneed and suffering hunger pangs by the time you reach the 12th , when there’s still a third of your round to go before sustenance arrives in the clubhouse. Good question! When it comes to the cost of a golf simulator, there are a number of things you need to factor in. The price being one – obviously! But price isn’t everything.  

The number of clubs you are entitled to carry in your golf bag is an often-debated subject and one that can lead to some confusion on occasion (remember the Ian Woosnam mix-up on club numbers at the Open a few years back?). Nevertheless, the rules are quite clear. You are permitted to carry a maximum of 14 clubs in the bag at any one time during tournament play. It isn’t compulsory to carry as many as 14 clubs. If you only want to take out three with you, you are free to do so. But 14 is the maximum. What do the Rules of Golf state about the number of clubs?  The 14-club rule was first adopted by the R&A in 1939, a year after being introduced by the USGA.  Before then, there was no upper limit. The rule stipulates that players are only allowed to carry 14 conforming clubs for a sanctioned competition event, or during any round that counts towards your handicap. Anyone found to have more than 14 clubs or replacing clubs during a round can be penalised - with anything from disqualification to the loss of up to four strokes in stroke play, or two holes in match play. During casual play, which would be any round where your score isn’t considered competitive or being attributed towards your handicap, then you can carry as many clubs as you wish. As long as they fit in the bag and you can haul them round the course! Which clubs can make up the 14 in a golf bag? The 14-club rule applies to any piece of equipment that you would intend to use to execute a shot – drivers, woods, irons, wedges and putter. There is no stipulation about which types of clubs you need to include in the 14. If you wanted to carry 14 drivers or seven putters and seven wedges (not advisable!) then you are within your rights.       Can I replace a golf club if it is damaged during a round? If you already have 14 clubs in your bag and one of the clubs breaks or is damaged during a round, whilst you can continue using it, you aren’t allowed to replace it. In the event that there is a break in play (like a thunderstorm) this does provide you with the opportunity to make repairs to the club, although you must only use the original components.  Anyone modifying a club or clubs outside these guidelines would face disqualification.  However, if you have less than 14 clubs in your bag and one of them gets broken during a round for whatever reason, you are allowed to add a replacement club. What clubs do amateur golfers most commonly use? Typically, most amateur golfers would take out the following set of clubs during a round. This selection can vary and will depend on the particular preferences of each individual pro. Longer hitters might prefer taking more clubs that play to their strengths, whilst those who focus on their short game might favour a slightly different combination, e.g., more wedges in the bag.   Generally, though, this is what you would expect to see in a professional’s bag: 1 x driver 1 x fairway wood 1 x hybrid 4 to 9 irons (6 irons) Pitching wedge Gap wedge Sand wedge Lob wedge Putter   Which 14 Clubs should you Carry? Depending on your standard, a set of twelve clubs would normally be sufficient – but you may find that less than a round dozen will suffice. When you are starting out as a raw beginner, you might find it easier to leave longer clubs, like drivers and fairway woods, to one side. These take more practice to use effectively, so initially focus on slightly shorter clubs in your bag, until you have built up confidence to hit these consistently. Once you become more adept, start adding a broader range of clubs to your bag – such as drivers, or even an extra wedge or two, to help you with approach shots to the green, for instance.   Don’t end up humping loads of clubs around with you, half of which you are never likely to use. There is no stipulation that you must have 14 clubs in your bag, when a number of around 10 will probably be more than ample. Trackman 4 vs GCQuad Review   The Trackman 4 and GCQuad are priced in a similar range and are commonly compared to each other. They are not after mass adoption like some other cheaper launch monitors but they are after the true professional golfers who want to focus on fine tuning their swing and those who get into the data of their club swings and ball flight. Right now it seems that the consensus is that the Trackman is the leader in this space. It is essentially used by every single pro right now while the GCQuad is used by some of the pros but doesn't have the full trust of the majority like the Trackman does.   Accuracy Both of these manufacturers claim that they have the most accurate launch monitors in the industry. While one can’t be telling the truth it is really hard to say which one is actually more accurate. These launch monitors both use cameras to get the most accuracy possible but the Trackman uses doppler radar technology as well. Some people feel that lasers give more accuracy than radar but the Trackman has found a way to make theirs exceptionally well, using radar technology. It could come down to a personal preference of what technology you find is more accurate to decide if you want to use the Trackman or GCQuad.   Features These both have essentially the same features. If there was a tie it would be in the features that they offer. Where the real tie breaker may come in is in the technology that they each use to get their data and the price. The GCQuad is a bit more affordable and does offer a similar product. If you are interested in a simulator that is this expensive it won’t matter as much to you probably to save a few thousand going for one or another tough. What matters is the accuracy and what you are comfortable with.   Data Both of these will provide real time data after every swing. There are also logs of data that can be reviewed after the fact. It is not without reason that professionals use the Trackman and even some have begun to use the GCQuad now as well. They both give exceptional data that can’t be found with other golf simulators.   Conclusion When it comes down to it the price, technology, and comfortability between the two models are really the only differences. If one of those or two of those matter more to you than the other, that one could be a good fit for you. Experiment playing on these simulators to see which one you think tracks your specific swing and shot the best before making a choice.

They use these infrared sensors to track the club as you swing it back and through where the ball is teed up or where it would be teed up. We say where it would be teed up because it isn't even necessary with Optishot to use a ball. They analyze the club data and determine based on your swing where the ball will travel and how it will travel. This can be a downside for some people or a bonus for those who don't want to chase around balls or don't have a ton of space to set up a screen and sim enclosure.   Shot Accuracy   While there is no actual ball that the Optishot tracks, just the club, it is remarkably accurate with how it displays your shots. Users say that it is the most accurate for iron and wood shots but can struggle a bit with chipping and putting. A lot of players on simulators don't even use the putting feature on most simulators so it is somewhat unimportant for a lot of people. Optishot also has a club calibration feature where users can calibrate their clubs to get an even higher accuracy rating.   Features   For a good price Optishot has it all. The reason it is one of the most expensive is because it gives the most data and is the most accurate reads according to a lot of people. This simulator has all that you can want in a launch monitor. Expect to get a great experience with the Trackman. For one of the most consistent and accurate systems look to the Trackman. It was designed for training and practicing your swing due to the accuracy and data that they provide their players on the system.     Radar Technology   The best and greatest technology is used to track your club and ball with the Trackman. This launch monitor sits behind the player and will track essentially everything that is occurring in front of it. The radar technology that they used is patented and is seen as the top in the golf simulator world. PGA professionals will use this to work on perfecting their swing down to the smallest tweaks because everything is tracked with precise accuracy.   Accuracy   This launch monitor is basically second to none on accuracy. We mentioned before that it is trusted by PGA Tour pros to help them make minor adjustments in their swing. One of the most important things about accuracy though is that it is consistent as well.
