WHAT TO CONSIDER WHEN CHOOSING GOLF PRACTICE EQUIPMENT

Problem first, tool second

Buy practice gear suited to your game, not whatever the golfing algorithms have made viral that week. If your swing path is the issue, a simple tool such as The Swing Plate will beat plenty of more complicated gadgets out there. If tempo is the issue, check out the Swing Speed Radar with Tempo tracking. Think about your weaknesses and focus on those, rather than building a generic training routine.

Binary feedback wins

When choosing a golf training aid, consider the format of the feedback. The best training aids quickly tell or show you whether what you did was right. A tool that gives you that immediate yes/no feedback is the fastest way to work on your technique. Think about a strike aid like the Divot Board, or a narrow Putting Gate - both make errors obvious so that you can react accordingly.

Friction kills good habits

If it takes ages to build or set up, you will be less inclined to use your practice gear. If possible, go for tool-free, indoor-friendly equipment you can leave out or stash in seconds. A roll-up putting mat is a great example, which you can use on the fly to turn spare minutes into real reps.

Build progression into your golf training

The best golf training aids push you to improve with progression of some kind. Putting gates that narrow, stick angles that change, targets that shrink. Progression keeps practice honest and gives you something to strive for.

See it, don't guess it

When practising your swing, it’s important to pair feel with visuals. A simple slow-motion camera or even your phone on a tripod can give instant side-by-side before/after shots. Ten swings with visual feedback beat a hundred blind ones!

Protect your body and you’ll practice more

Your joints and muscles will feel the effects of high-intensity practice. So invest in gear that makes the process as kind to your body as possible. A softer, wrist-friendly mat turns 20 balls into 60 without the ache. Comfort isn’t a luxury - it’s how you rack up enough reps for positive changes to stick.

Space & noise reality check

Your golf training aids should work well with your environment, in terms of how much space they take up and how much noise they make. It goes without saying that quiet wins indoors. A roll-out putting mat and a Visio putting laser for alignment practice are two great examples of a near-silent indoor practice setup that you can use at any time of day.

A strike training mat might be better suited to working outdoors and at a time when you’re willing to make plenty of noise.

Compatibility with your setup and needs

Try and pick golf training aids that slot neatly into your set-up: they should work with your net/mat and not block camera or launch-monitor sight lines. It’s also a good idea to use products with built-in guidance (QR code drills or app programmes) so you know exactly how to use them from day one.

Just Installed this new Pro+ screen at my commercial golf simulator. The difference between the old one and this new one is astounding. Not only is it much quieter but the image projection is so much more clearer. It is installed quite tightly using the Bungee balls but there is no significant bounce back.I unequivocally recommend the Pro + impact screen.

Weather is no longer a problem for me, I can be in my garage and on the 7th at Augusta at the same time!

The golf team enjoys practicing with the Puttout training mat. More practice means better putting on the course. The quality of the product is excellent.

I already had a large gym in my house, however, I wanted to start practicing my golf at home as well as getting fitter. I didn't want a built in option so the simbox enclosure was the perfect solution. It allowed me to place it wherever I wanted in my room which was a bonus as I couldn't have it against a wall. The quality of the simbox is second to none, I went for the Close Knit Baffle screen as I wanted the most durable screen for the amount of practice I do, it is also super quiet which is a bonus. I can't thanks the team at Golfbays enough, all of the guys are super knowledgeable, you can tell they all have golfing backgrounds. I would definitely recommend.

This is an exceptional machine with fast delivery and outstanding customer service from Golf Bays. It’s my second purchase from Golf Bays, they deliver top marks all the time and I would highly recommend!

Jonathan

Solid net strong enough for practicing driver and every other club in the bag. Return slope very handy saving you having to collect balls, they roll straight back to your feet.Recommend also buying some heavy duty ground anchors or pegs to secure it if used in garden.

Liam

Fantastic quality, easy to install and fast delivery. Could not ask for much more. We also purchased a projector and protective enclosure that are brilliant. Creates a very professional looking set up.

Luke M.

Great quality, easy to assemble was hitting balls within hours of delivery which was within 48hrs. Require a few more items to complete the perfect room. Will use again.

The box was delivered very quickly including customs clearance, perfect. The SimBox exceeded my expectations, black ball protection very noise-insulating, Impact Screen Pro+ very good for Full HD.Thanks to the video tutorial, it can also be set up alone, but much more relaxed with two people.Simply perfect, highly recommended, thanks to the 6 sizes there is always a place at home, as long as the room height fits.Very convincing qualityIn short: brilliant for the home simulator

Nice and easy to get set up. A few minor issues with software but easily sorted with a quick call to the team at golfbays. I recommend TGC2019 for game play. Not tried Skytraks own courses but I believe they are good.

Peter H

Happy with the quality of the turf and would highly recommend to others.

Frequently Asked Questions

Want 1-to-1 advice?

They work because they standardise eye position, shoulder line and shaft lean, so you start the ball on line and work on that muscle memory. Pair putting mirror with a start-line gate for rapid feedback.

Use a strike/low-point board: instant ball-then-turf vs heavy/thin feedback builds centred contact fast. It’s easily one of the biggest things you can work on for consistency. A Divot Board is ideal.

You don’t need a high-spec setup. A phone and a tripod will work nicely together, or go for a Live View Pro to accelerate the process.

It’s possible, so keep props out of the hitting zone for overhead sensors, avoid tall obstacles in a radar’s line of sight, and manage glare from mirrors/shiny sticks near impact.

It's a good idea to focus on tempo first, power second. Use a tempo trainer or metronome to groove a consistent backswing-to-downswing rhythm.

Ideally, choose tools with built-in progression. Gates that narrow, stick angles that change, targets that shrink - that kind of thing. That way you can tighten tolerances as you improve and keep making positive steps way after you’ve purchased.

A good benchmark is a 3:1 rhythm: about three counts up, one count down. In plain English: “one-two-three… hit”. You want a smooth takeaway to the top, then a quicker (but not rushed) downswing to impact. The absolute speed can change, but the tempo ratio stays the same. A tempo trainer or metronome makes this easy: set a four-beat loop and swing back on 1-2-3, strike on 4. Keep that cadence and your contact, timing and start line will get more repeatable.

For most golfers, strike quality/low-point control moves the scoring needle fastest. A simple strike board gives binary feedback that tightens contact before you start to focus on plane aesthetics. Strike is king!

In reality, both have a place. Use a training aid for blocked reps to learn a specific move or technique, then switch to random/variable practice, where you change the club/target/shot each ball, to make it stick under pressure. Practising with this kind of blend is likely to lead to better skill retention and transfer onto the course when you need it most.
